Melt and Crystal Seperation Mechanisms at KÄ«lauea Iki.
My current research project focuses on exploring melt and crystal separation mechanisms recorded by lava cores at Kīlauea Iki.
Estimating Magma Decompression Rates at Cerro Machin Volcano, Colombia.
My undergraduate senior thesis analyzed bubble texture from pumice clasts in order to estimate magma decompression rates from the 3600 B.P eruption of Cerro Machin Volcano, Colombia. Decompression rates have a direct correlation to hazards a future eruption may pose.
Left figure is a lava fountain from KÄ«lauea Iki. Right figure shows the Hele Shaw apparatus I will be using to explore potential melt and crystal separation mechanisms at KÄ«lauea Iki.
In order to estimate magma decompression rates, I estimated bubble number density (BND) . In order to estimate BND, I took images of bubbles in Cerro Machin pumice. Left figure is a thin section scan from a pumice from Cerro Machin. Right figure shows a Backscattered Electron image I took on the SEM of the bubbles at 500x magnification.
